Sveti Stefan, Montenegro Travel

(MP) In the Balkans the most iconic images associated with Montenegro are of the tiny islet Famed for its’ beauty named Sveti Stefan or St. Stefan. It’s attached to the coast by a narrow isthmus, the island lies across the bay from Villa Miločer and the resort’s stand-alone Aman Spa, and together these historic sites include the Aman. You haven’t lived until you’ve been a guest at Aman.

Celebrity travelers took note early on: Montenegro became independent in 2006, and its sparkling coastline (think Croatia without the hype) is no longer a state secret. The tiny and impossibly picturesque Sveti Stefan island provides its biggest ‘wow’ moment. For centuries it was a simple fishing community until someone had the bright idea to buy the whole island and turn it into a luxury destination. Now there are over 103 hotels in St. Stefan with average prices ranging from $28 to $79 per night. St. Stefan is no longer just for billionaires. As the travel contrast grows between the rich and poor there aren’t many places you can enjoy a vacation besides the elite!

Montenegro became a hit with Hollywood and European royalty (guests have included Sofia Loren and Queen Elizabeth II) but its appeal faded in the 1990s. Over the last few years, tradespeople have replaced screen goddesses on its exclusive cobbled streets, and the resort reopened this summer, more glamorous than ever. The town is on the Budva Riviera, the heart of Montenegro’s beach culture. The Mediterranean climate makes it a happening destination of the rich and famous from March to September.

Where to stay in Sveti Stefan?

Nowadays Sveti Stefan is a part of the luxury hotel chain Aman Resorts. If you wish to spend peaceful holidays on the unique island, you should set aside a considerable amount of money. However, there is a variety of private accommodation on the mainland in front of the island, from which you can enjoy a spectacular view to Sveti Stefan.

What to do?

If you are accommodated on the mainland, you can use the beach to the left of the causeway, the one to the right is for the use of hotel guests only. You can also take a walk on the coastal path to the King’s beach and admire the Villa Milocer, former summer residence of the Serbian dynasty Karadjordjevic, and then continue through the pine woods to the Przno beach.

For those who love hiking, the mountains above Sveti Stefan are the ideal area for beautiful walks. It guarantees lovely views to the sea, beaches and little settlements along the Riviera of Budva. You can always make a break in several medieval monasteries of Pastrovici, hidden in the woods, and take a rest of your body and soul.
